So, Hi everyone. I just got back from a lecture held by a Rabbi at the student center(dont remember his name- darn!). The topic was on passing judgement, well, according to the Torah, so I got a teeny bit of Jewish learning under my belt (finally!). I wish I had brought a notebook because while the parts of the torah he quoted were familiar to most i would have liked to write them down (all I remmeber he kept saying 1:27 b! near the bottom of the page! cant remember from what book -_-). Basically the idea was God is going to judge you in the way you judge others. If YOU take into consideration the big picture and step back and dont pass judgement without considering that you might not know the whole story, God will look at the big picture when judging you.
If you are harsh and pass judgement without thinking that there is more to the story that you could not possibly know ("Do not judge a man until you walk a mile in his shoes"- kind of thing) When it is time for God to judge you he will do so in the same manner.
That was the bare bones of the talk though, it was an hour and a half and a lot of people asked really hard questions about how to know what is right and wrong and what if a person believes what they are doing is truly the right thing, like the suicide bombers, etc etc. So it was an intense lecture.
A lot of kids there were familiar with the torah and could point back to it when asking questions and since I couldnt and he asked for concrete examples, I was quiet. He also examined it down the each word- no lie. We talked about how a well placed "the" contributed to how one reads one of the laws. And how it would mean something else without the "the" so it was very educational.
I enjoyed it, though most of the kids knew each other, I tried to make a bit of conversation on the walk back but it wasn't really enough. Jessie was doing much better because he could have a theological discussion and debate while I couldn't so he probably was able to forge a friendship easier.
Anyway, earlier before the lecture I met up with jessie to have a whirlwind food tour around the center city. We took yet another bus and good off at the central bus station and walked down jaffa street into this market place that was phenomenal! Then I admitted I had a sweet tooth and he showed me the best bakery and this other stand with these crunchy, things...that were like soaked in honey, and Rugaleth!!!! Its like... warm and gooey like a cinnamon bun without the icing but looking like a mini crossiant sort of... I dont know. But amazing!!! yummy!!! He sowed me the new mall and where the best ice cream and ice coffee is, and where the best shwarma is- which i haven't tried but he swears I want it, I just dont know yet.
Then we got to the german colony where he showed me more amazing eateries. So many places to try, the food here is SPECTACULAR! And he says we missed a ton actually because we had to be back early for the lecture (there was free pizza there too) Theres so much to see and check out I dont know what to do with myself!
So it was whirlwind but fun. Also we took a bus back from the German colony so i still dont know how to get back to campus from the old city/ city center!!! Tomorrow I am going with gred because I have to buy a sweatshirt, it gets cold here at night and I cant go another day without it!!!
But I have class early tomorrow so I had better get going to bed, more pictures will probably be up though!
Yay! Food! sounds like you had a great day :) i'm happy you are enjoying yourself and learning.
